One of the things that I love the most about journaling and the journaling community is the atmosphere and feeling that go into getting your thoughts down on a page. Then, add in the stress release of bullet journaling, feeling organized, and getting the running to-do list of groceries, errands, and work down out of your brain and onto the paper as well. Journaling is literal therapy you carry around with you on the go. Some of the best feelings is setting and establishing the tone and ambiance of journaling. Enter hygge. Hygge is not a new concept on the blog because it is a light feeling of happiness from self, things, surroundings places, and even people. Pick a color to describe your mood today. Make a list of everything you can think of in that color.
You created a new holiday that everyone must celebrate. Describe the holiday and the reason for the celebration.
What is the most beautiful sound you have ever heard?
Write a story about falling in love. It can be with a person, a thing, an experience, or a moment.
Home can be places and people. Describe your home as a place and as a person.
You find a gift wrapped on your doorstep. You don't know who it is from, but it has a note on it that says: "Unwrap me. Find happiness." What's in the box?
Laughter is literally medicine. Describe what doses you take, what situations you need it most, and what the medicine looks and tastes like.
Create the Hygge Vibe
Find a fireplace. We recently got an electric fireplace that sets the tone in the morning when the house is all dark and the baby isn’t up yet. If you don’t have a real fireplace or electric fireplace, don’t fret. One of my favorite things that I used to do in my classroom was to play a a Youtube fireplace on the board. You can easily do this off to the side on a laptop or phone. It makes everything feel cozy immediately.
Grab something to drink that you love. Coffee is my go-to journaling beverage of choice, but you can always grab whatever makes you happy. I recommend getting something special for writing time. You want to try mushroom matcha powder? Save it for writing time.
Grab a blanket. A good one. I have a strong blanket preference when I am finding my spot to write. It involves blankets and pillows so that I can feel comfortable. On rough days, it mean mean snuggling up into bed with the covers wrapped around me.
Music or background noise. I was recently reminded during one of our toddler’s tantrums that music is more powerful than we often realize. The Calm app plays background music (No fancy membership needed for sounds) or you can Youtube an option. This added level of music is helpful if you, like me, have a hard time cutting your brain off and focusing on one task at a time.
Photos. I love keeping photos in my journals and planners so I can host my own highlight reel of happiness. Seeing my family in positive, happy moments makes me feel immediately better if I am in need of a comfy journaling session.
Go on an adventure (if possible). Find a coffee shop or bench outside to sit down and take in your surroundings. A sense of newness might be inspiring to what you put down in the notebook.
Indulge with food. Find a delicious blondie brownie or cinnamon roll to snack on when you start your journaling. It makes the whole experience seem indulgent and a treat.
